Lullaby of Broadway:Top 8 Big Hollywood Musicals

After a solid month of music-related Top 8 lists, I felt like I should wean you off the topic gently.

So here I confess my unconscious addiction to the Big Hollywood Musical. I know they're absurd. I know they're ridiculous. But the costumes! The cheese! The songs! The dancing! The Gene Kelly!

I didn't realize that I had a thing for musicals till one Friday night last winter when Steve was on the midnight shift and I was avoiding our empty house by hanging around TGI Friday's playing the Buzztime (NTN) Trivia games. The games are usually general knowledge, but a few times a month they have a specialized game on some random topic like Robert Redford, Famous Speeches, or Mountains. On this fateful night, the random topic was Musicals. I thought I'd do alright, since I watched a lot of musicals with Mom in my misspent youth, so I logged in. And then I proceeded to get every single question right and my score ended up in the top ten for the country (and Canada). It was shocking and a little embarrassing to realize that I had accidentally become an expert on musicals. It wasn't on purpose, I swear.

Anyway, here are my favorites. I suggest you familiarize yourself with them posthaste. I'll quiz you later.

1.) Fiddler on the Roof

2.) Singing in the Rain

3.) Thoroughly Modern Millie

4.) The Sound of Music

5.) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

6.) My Fair Lady

7.) Hello, Dolly!

8.) Brigadoon

That's some good stuff right there.

  • You are right, Gina that is some good stuff..
I have a confession to make :/ Sometimes I the song from Oklahoma you know the one that goes " Ok la hom a where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain" only at home of course. Really!

  • that should say..sing the song :)

  • Since this seems to be confession time...
Six of the eight are in my own personal collection. Hello, my name is Christi and I am addicted to watching musicals.
    Great taste, Gina.

  • of those, i've only seen brigadoon. i've only seen that (in the movie form and live action) because i've a fondness for all things scottish up to and including bagpipes.

    brigadoon is comprised of awesome.

By Blogger rebecca marie, at 2:51 PM

  • And because Brigadoon features Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, it is also comprised of HOT.

Rebecca, you really, really, really need to go rent most of the movies on this list. You are missing a vital part of your cultural education...and Gene Kelly in tight pants. (Seriously, these are such good movies--so fun. And even though parts of them are admittedly stupid, they're so entertaining, partly because they're stupid.)

Christi, you're just trying to make me like you with all this "things in common" business. I gotta tell you...it's working!

Dody, I kind of hate both Oklahoma and West Side Story, but I still find myself constantly bursting into songs or quoting lines from both. I am physically incapable of driving across the border into Oklahoma without singing "Ooooooooooooooo klahoma where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain." It's a sickness.

  • I missed Thoroughly Modern Millie somehow, I'll have to get it on the todo list.

My favs include West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, and {ahem} Newsies.

You nailed it with Fiddler and My Fair Lady. (Just you wait Henry Higgins...)

By Blogger Jason Hill, at 3:42 PM

  • My dad loves Newsies. I should probably never watch it again, because I have an unhealthy obsession with Christian Bale, and he's jail bait in that movie, ergo, I would feel like Michael Jackson.

I have seen Fiddler on the Roof a minimum of 20 times (conservative estimate). I know all of the songs and probably 85% of the dialog by heart--I don't even need to quote along with the movie, I can do it with no cues. Mom and Dad had the soundtrack album, and we listened to a taped version of it in the car ALL the time. Seriously, for months and months at a time with no breaks. And we STILL love it. That's staying power right there.

  • Oh, and Jason? Do you remember Joe Molzer from Cascade? Giant 6'7" teddy bear with white-blond hair and booming laugh? Well, he used to come over to my house and watch Thoroughly Modern Millie at least once a month. It's hilarious.

By Blogger Unknown, at 3:50 PM

  • My fair lady is one of my top 5 beloved movies OF ALL TIMES!

By Blogger Jess, at 5:31 PM

  • Of course I remember Joe. That seals it, I might not even wait for Tivo and go get a copy of TMM. Its got Julie Andrews, what more could I want?

And, Christian Bale wasn't jail-bait for you when that movie came out. Just think of him in Batman and all is good. (Santa Fe, Are you there...?)

By Blogger Jason Hill, at 5:49 PM

  • Dancer in the Dark is one of the most amazing movies I have ever seen. Its hard for me to say that its a fav because its so sad and depressing I don't know if I could ever watch it again, but it is definately one of the best.

By Blogger Lisa, at 9:32 AM

  • Yeah, I'm avoiding Dancer in the Dark for just that reason. (That it's sad and depressing, not because it's Rush's favorite.)

Jason, not only does TMM have Julie Andrews, it also has Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing. It's so great. I can't believe I lost that video. That's it! I'm heading to Amazon.com right now!

  • As for Christian Bale, that was then this is now. I just don't want to run the risk of my adult self thinking his tween self is too cute.

But thinking of Batman Returns is always a good idea. {Sigh.} I feel better now.

By Blogger Unknown, at 10:57 AM

  • 1. When I lived in Oklahoma I sang that song often....and then OC put on Oklahoma as it's musical! Ridiculousness!

    2. Christian Bale + his crazy overbite = fantastic!

By Blogger RoniZee, at 12:06 PM

  • I've honestly never noticed his overbite. Obviously, I don't care if his teeth enter the room five minutes before him, I love him just as he is. (Extra points if you can name the movie I stole that last phrase from.)

By Blogger Unknown, at 12:10 PM

  • i know it's only a pretend Broadway show, but me and Seth saw Lion King for his birthday last year in Spokane (the BEST birthday present I've ever given) and I kid you not- it was so amazingly amazing that when the animals paraded down the aisles, I cried because it was so amazing. I'm a giant nerd. I felt like a little kid *smile w/ a little tear*

By Blogger arwen, at 2:07 PM

  • I know what you mean, Arwen. I felt like a little kid both times I saw Beauty and the Beast (once in Vienna as Die Schone und Das Biest). And from what I hear, The Lion King is even more spectacular.

All of this talk of musicals makes me REALLY hope that Spamalot is still on Broadway when we move to the East Coast.

By Blogger Unknown, at 2:30 PM

  • i am so jealous of anyone who saw lion king. i was so looking forward to it, but it came to portland AFTER i had become a kept woman.

and by kept, i mean poor.

By Blogger rebecca marie, at 4:48 PM

  • I think I would give up a chance to see The Lion King to be a kept woman. And by kept I mean purposely unemployed. (Work stinks. I REALLY didn't want to come in to the office this morning.)

By Blogger Unknown, at 9:20 AM

  • i'm so sorry gina - maybe you should get knocked up and be a stay at home mom with me.

we could just sit online and talk all day.

By Blogger rebecca marie, at 12:19 PM

  • I think the "mom" part of being a stay at home mom would really cut into my laying around time.
